The Department of Microbiology at St. Mary's Girls School, Perambur was established in the academic year 2004-2005. Since its inception it has offered comprehensive knowledge with an opportunity to excel and hence cater to young talent through academics and activities.

The department aims to impart knowledge, understanding, skills and application oriented approach amongst young minds. It makes students work hard with sincerity and intelligence. Innovative and interactive teaching methods offered here make the whole process of learning very interesting and engaging for students. The department offers an amicable learning environment under the guidance of a well qualified and experienced teacher, who is also one of the authors of the present Tamilnadu Standard XI and XII Microbiology textbooks. The learning needs of students are facilitated to stir their curiosity, instill critical thinking and creativity with an inquisitive mind.

The department has a classroom cum well equipped laboratory housed with all the basic amenities for demonstration and hands on experience of various experiments on par with the present syllabus and also is upgraded periodically with keen interest and support of the school management.

•    In order to enhance the understanding of the concepts taught, the Department organizes annual visits to  Microbiology and Biotechnology departments in colleges and industries. These visits have certainly broadened the horizon of understanding the scope of the subject amongst students.
